The verdict

Revelstoke Mountain Resort skis one lift-served mountain above the railway town of Revelstoke, British Columbia. The operator's own 1,713 m vertical, from a 512 m base to the top of the Stoke chair at 2,225 m, is the largest lift-served drop in North America, beating Whistler Blackcomb's 1,610 m. Only five lifts serve that terrain, so the runs are long and the network is sparse: our own measurement finds 90.3 km of piste behind just 14.9 km of lift line, and beginner terrain is thin.1234

  • Beginners: the operator rates only 12% of its terrain easiest, and our own routing measurement finds just 29% of the piste network reachable from the base without descending something harder than an easy run
  • Anyone who wants quick laps and short queues: five lifts open 90.3 km of measured piste, a piste-to-lift ratio of 6.05, among the highest we have measured anywhere, which means long traverses and everyone funnelled onto the same few chairs
  • Travellers without a car: the nearest airport with scheduled service, Kelowna, is a 199 km, 2.5-hour drive, and Calgary is 413 km and 4.5 hours away over Rogers Pass
  • Anyone counting on reliable low-mountain snow: the base sits at only 512 m, and community trip reports repeatedly describe rain or heavy slush on the lower runs while the upper mountain stays cold and dry

The operator's own mountain-stats page gives a 512 m base at the Village and The Sutton Place Hotel, matching the trail map, and a top of 2,225 m at the top of the Stoke chair, the highest lift-served point; skiresort.com independently states the same 512 m base and 2,225 m summit. Two higher points are visible from the pistes but sit above lift service: Sub Peak at 2,340 m, reached only by a short bootpack from the top of Stoke, and the true summit of Mount Mackenzie at 2,456 m, which is outside the ski area entirely. The operator's marketed 1,713 m vertical (2,225 minus 512) is the figure behind its claim to the largest lift-served vertical drop in North America, ahead of Whistler Blackcomb's 1,610 m.

Marketed vs measuredRevelstoke does not publish a piste-kilometre figure at all: the operator states its terrain as 3,121 skiable acres across 75 runs, split 12% easiest, 43% intermediate and 45% advanced/expert by its own count. Skiresort.com's independent measurement puts the marked network at 55 km, split 16/18/21 km (29%/33%/38%), a noticeably less extreme picture than the operator's acreage split, because the alpine bowls are enormous open acreage relative to the length of any one named line through them. Our own routing measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 90.3 km of marked piste, well above skiresort.com's figure and a wider gap than usual for this site. The operator's own trail map names dozens of individual glade descents across the North, South, Montana and Greely bowls and the lower-mountain trees (Stihl Life Glades, Conifers of Gnarnia, Powder Monkey Glades, Beauty Glades and more); our best explanation for the gap is that the routing graph counts many of these named glade lines as separate pistes where skiresort.com's count does not.

The operator's own count is 5: the Revelation Gondola from the Village (512 m) to Mackenzie Outpost (1,690 m), two high-speed quads (Stoke and Ripper) and a fixed-grip quad (Stellar, opened December 2019), plus one magic carpet in the beginner area. That matches what the operator's own current trail map draws: exactly four named lift lines plus a beginner carpet. Aggregators disagree: skiresort.com counts 7 and another secondary source counts 6, most likely from splitting the gondola's mid-station at Mackenzie Outpost into two lifts or counting the carpet system as more than one unit. The operator's figure is used here.1

Prices are for the 2026/27 winter season from the operator's own ticket page, current as of this research. Revelstoke uses two pricing windows rather than one flat rate: a peak window (December 24, 2026 to March 14, 2027) at CAD 220 for an adult, and an early/late window (November 28-December 23, 2026 and March 15-April 11, 2027) at CAD 199. Senior (65+) and youth (13-18) pay the same reduced rate in both windows; a child (6-12) pays roughly a third of the adult rate; a Tot (5 and under) skis free. An afternoon ticket from noon is available in both windows. Student discounts apply only to season passes, not single-day tickets, and the operator states all rates are subject to change without notice.

Piste colour is set by each resort under its own rules, so a red in one country is a blue in another. Measured gradient is comparable everywhere.

One base village feeds one connected mountain: the Revelation Gondola climbs from the Village at 512 m to Mackenzie Outpost at 1,690 m, and three chairs (Stoke, Ripper and the beginner-oriented Stellar) fan out above and beside it into the trees, glades and open alpine bowls higher up.

Five lifts for 90 km of measured piste

The operator counts 5 lifts: the Revelation Gondola, the Stoke and Ripper high-speed quads, the Stellar fixed-grip quad and one magic carpet. Our own routing measurement finds 90.3 km of piste behind just 14.9 km of lift line, a piste-to-lift ratio of 6.05, among the highest of any resort we have measured. That means long runs and relatively little traversing back to a lift, but it also means almost the whole mountain funnels through the same few chairs: lose Ripper for a day, as community reports describe happening in extreme cold near -20°C, and the alternative routes back to a working lift get considerably longer.1426

Long, steep and mostly gladed

The operator rates 45% of its terrain advanced or expert and only 12% easiest; our own measurement finds a length-weighted average gradient of 25% and puts 40% of the network on slopes of 30% grade or steeper. The trail map names dozens of individual glade lines rather than open groomed runs: Stihl Life Glades, Conifers of Gnarnia, Aspen Glades and Devil's Club below Mackenzie Outpost, and Powder Monkey Glades, Beauty Glades, Top 40 and Back 40 Glades in North Bowl. The longest continuous descent our graph finds is 15.1 km with 1,824 m of vertical, in line with the operator's own claimed longest run, Last Spike, at 15.2 km.134

Four alpine bowls above the trees

North Bowl, South Bowl, Montana Bowl and Greely Bowl sit above the treeline around Sub Peak, reached from the top of the Stoke and Ripper chairs by traverses and, for the highest lines, a short bootpack. This is genuine high-alpine terrain rather than marked piste in the usual sense: the operator's own current trail map warns in a boxed notice that ground below its posted elevation icons "contains reduced snow depth, extremely tight trees, and big cliffs" and that skiing below that elevation without the training to handle it will require a rescue. Community trip reports separately describe an inbounds ten-foot drop into an open creek in the Ripper glades and cliff-outs near Critical Path and Separate Reality that are not obvious from above, and note that cellular coverage is reported reliable only at the base, so a group splitting up on the upper mountain should agree a regroup point before leaving the gondola rather than planning to call each other.74

Where the easy terrain actually is

The dedicated learning terrain sits in the Stellar Zone, served by its own fixed-grip quad, plus a slower-paced area near Revelation Lodge. Our own routing measurement finds only 29% of the network reachable from the base without descending something harder than an easy run, and community advice is blunt about the gap between that and a conventional blue-run resort: a poster on r/Revelstoke recommended a progressing intermediate start on Stellar, then move to Sally Alley and the groomed Ripper runs, before attempting Stoke at all.14

Heli-skiing and cat-skiing are sold here, not skied here

Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing, Revelstoke's resident heli operator, flies into more than 500,000 acres of the surrounding Selkirk and Monashee ranges, and is bookable alongside a lift ticket. The resort's own "Cat Skiing Intro to Powder Program" is a two-day package, not on-mountain cat access: day one is ski instruction at Revelstoke Mountain Resort itself, and day two moves to Great Northern Snowcat Skiing's separate tenure across Upper Arrow Lake, reached by a ferry crossing to Galena Bay. Neither adds a metre to the piste or lift figures on this page, which cover the lift-served area only.8910

A low base and a wet-snow climate

At 512 m, Revelstoke's base is low for the size of its vertical, and the resort sits in the Interior wet-belt climate that also gives it 10.5 m of average annual snowfall. Community trip reports repeatedly describe the split this produces: excellent cold snow on Stoke and Ripper above roughly 1,700 m at the same time as rain, crust or heavy slush on the lower mountain, including at least one reported case of a first-timer skiing top-to-bottom on the advertised full vertical and finding thin, disappointing cover partway down. The general advice in those reports is to treat the descent below Revelation Lodge as the final ski-out for the day rather than a repeatable run, unless a recent cold storm has covered the middle and lower mountain.111121314

The claimed largest lift-served vertical in North America, 1,713 m, is a genuine full-day ski for a strong skier.143
Confident intermediate good 18 km of the marketed 55 km is intermediate-graded, and the Ripper and Stellar sides hold enough groomed cruising to build a full day around, with Stoke's easier lines available once confidence grows.31
Second-week skier fair Community advice is specific and blunt: start on the Stellar chair, then Sally Alley and the groomed Ripper runs, before attempting Stoke, because the green transit routes are long and narrow and the upper blues run steep. A progressing skier who follows that sequence can have a good week; one who does not may find the mountain unforgiving.4
Family with young children fair There is a dedicated beginner area at the Stellar chair and structured kids' lesson programs, but easy terrain is thin beyond that one zone: our own measurement finds only 29% of the network reachable on easy runs alone. Families with mixed abilities will find the advanced side of the mountain genuinely inaccessible to a learning child rather than merely quiet.14
First-timer poor Only 12% of the operator's own terrain is rated easiest, and our own routing measurement finds just 29% of the network reachable without a harder run, one of the lower shares we have measured. A first-timer is better served by a resort with dedicated beginner acreage closer to the base than by the open Revelstoke network.14
Budget skier poor A 2026/27 peak-season adult day ticket is CAD 220 at the window, among the highest in Canada, and the resort is a 199 km, 2.5-hour drive from the nearest airport with scheduled service. There is no fixed low-season window rate, only the early/late-season price of CAD 199; the Mountain Collective's two included days are the more affordable route in for a passholder.515

By car

Revelstoke sits on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1), which is also the only road link in either direction: Rogers Pass to the east toward Golden and Calgary, and the route past Sicamous and Three Valley Gap to the west toward Kelowna and Vancouver. The operator gives Kelowna International Airport as 199 km, about 2.5 hours; Calgary International Airport as 413 km, about 4.5 hours; and Vancouver as 631 km, about 7 hours. Rogers Pass closes for avalanche control without notice in winter, sometimes for hours; there is no useful detour, and locals recommend fuelling in Golden and carrying food, water and warm bedding for a long closure. The resort base is 8 km from the town of Revelstoke itself, connected by a resort shuttle running roughly 06:15 to 20:30 daily for CAD 2 a ride.

By train

No scheduled passenger rail serves Revelstoke: VIA Rail's transcontinental Canadian was rerouted north through Kamloops-Jasper-Edmonton in the early 1990s and has not called at Revelstoke station since. The only passenger train through town today is the Rocky Mountaineer, a summer-only luxury tourist service with no winter operation, despite the town having been built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s.

  • On a 10 cm-plus powder morning, join the Revelation Gondola queue around 07:00–07:30 for two or three relatively fresh laps, or deliberately arrive around 10:00 to target delayed bowl rope drops.1718

    The late strategy sacrifices first tracks and may require the town shuttle because parking becomes tighter; the early strategy means roughly an hour waiting before upload.

  • Lap Vertigo Ridge and Separate Reality early, then return to Stoke before the Lemming Line crowd forms for North Bowl.1917

    A November 2023 r/Revelstoke thread on the First Tracks Breakfast Club and a February 2026 conditions thread both note that Stoke and Vertigo Ridge terrain tends to open before North Bowl, which commonly opens around 10:00 or later.

  • Use the singles line on Stoke whenever it is running a substantial queue.2021

    A February 2026 trip report says the singles lane repeatedly bypassed moderate-to-large Stoke lines; powder weekends and holidays are the problem periods, while ordinary weekdays can remain quiet.

  • Check that day's posted closing times and ski North or Greely Bowl well before Ripper closes, because Ripper has historically stopped earlier than Stoke.2223

    Discussion reports conflict sharply—from 14:30 Ripper and 15:00 Stoke to roughly 15:30 and 16:00—so old trip reports are unsafe planning guides.

  • Take a town shuttle around 07:00 on a powder day rather than aiming for the lift-opening buses at 08:00–08:30.24

    Riders report roughly 20-minute service and a C$2 fare, but buses near opening can pass stops already full.

  • If driving on a busy snow morning, be parked by about 07:45 for a reasonably close space; if arriving around 10:00, use the shuttle instead.1825

    A March 2026 r/Revelstoke parking thread says the lot is ample on an ordinary weekday, so the early-parking rule mainly matters for powder weekends and exceptional crowds.

  • When approaching from Calgary, check DriveBC for planned Rogers Pass control before departure and leave a spare travel day rather than scheduling a flight immediately after skiing.2627

    There is no reasonable short detour between Golden and Revelstoke; closures can last hours or occasionally overnight, and locals recommend fuel in Golden plus food, water and warm bedding.

  • Choose Kelowna over Calgary when similar flights are available and minimizing winter-pass exposure matters, but still check Three Valley Gap before leaving Sicamous.2728

    Travellers describe the Kelowna approach as materially easier than Rogers Pass, although Highway 1 west of Revelstoke can also close for collisions or avalanche work.

  • For an efficient first Stoke powder lap, take the short bootpack from the Stoke cat track to Hot Sauce, then progress to Jalapeño if you want a similarly steep, lightly treed line.2930

    Hot Sauce is repeatedly recommended both groomed and soft; South Bowl provides a route toward Jalapeño when open.

  • In Separate Reality and the Vertigo Ridge sector, favour Brake Check or Parachute after the first rush because Meet the Neighbours tracks out faster.2930

    This compact sector offers open faces, spaced trees and optional cliffs, making it more varied and easier to repeat than committing immediately to North Bowl.

  • Save Greely Bowl for clear visibility, traverse far enough for the longer eastern pitches, then follow the established exit through the gully toward Big Woody and Ripper.193132

    Greely often preserves powder well into the afternoon, but its long, bumpy exit—often called the Pain Drain—can erase the benefit if you enter tired or lose the main route.

  • When Stoke is crowded or delayed, lap 3 Bears from Sweet Spot and Monkey Bars directly from Ripper, then search Top 40 and Back 40 Glades.1933

    A February and a March 2026 r/Revelstoke conditions thread say 3 Bears holds untracked lines unusually well, and that the named Ripper glades remained worthwhile even during a prolonged Stoke closure.

  • On a groomer day, make Snow Rodeo your main Stoke-side objective and use Chopper, Sally Alley and Burn Down for easier Ripper laps.3435

    A local's 2012 Teton Gravity Research forum post called top-to-bottom Snow Rodeo the mountain's standout groomer, while a January 2025 r/Revelstoke thread from a progressing intermediate found Sally Alley and upper Burn Down the most approachable sequence.

  • Before paying the roughly C$190–199 window rate, compare a Canadian Lift Pass five-pack or an eligible passholder friends-and-family voucher.3637

    A 2025 discussion put the five-pack near C$120 per day and said it could be shared, while 2025–26 passholders reported limited 50%-off vouchers; verify current eligibility before relying on either.

  • Buy an approximately C$8 deli sandwich at Southside Market and carry it rather than sacrificing an upper-mountain lap for cafeteria lunch.38

    An r/Revelstoke budget-lunch thread in December 2024 reported microwaves at Revelation Lodge for brown-bag food, but a 2026 follow-up did not confirm they remain, so treat that part as unverified.

  • Use La Baguette's 06:30 opening for coffee, pastries or a grab-and-go lunch before joining the gondola line.3940

    A September 2025 r/Revelstoke thread on favourite local businesses and a March 2026 eating-out thread both praise the town branch; opinions on the resort-base branch's food are mixed, though it remains convenient for queue-time coffee.

  • Shop at Save-On-Foods or Southside Market before 15:00, because the post-ski grocery rush becomes chaotic.4142

    For dinner deals, a March 2026 thread identified Big Eddy Pub's Wednesday wings and Thursday burger special plus La Baguette's Sunday pizza-and-pint offer; confirm current days and prices.

  • Do not chase the advertised full vertical unless recent cold storms have covered the middle and lower mountain; normally treat the descent below Revelation as the final ski-out.111213

    An r/skiing thread in November 2025, an undated snowHeads thread on spring skiing near Calgary and a June 2020 r/skiing post all describe excellent upper-mountain snow alongside rain, thin cover, crust or slush below; one first-timer regretted committing top to bottom halfway down.

  • Snowboarders should ride the full Last Spike only as a novelty and carry speed through its flats rather than using it as a routine top-to-bottom lap.43

    A former resident says parts effectively climb and that the cross-mountain roads back from Greely and Ripper are also tiring for riders; skiers disagree because they can skate the connectors.

  • Do not bring a tentative intermediate expecting a conventional blue-run resort; start on Stellar, then use Sally Alley and groomed Ripper runs before attempting Stoke.3522

    An r/Revelstoke thread in January 2025 and an undated snowHeads thread describe the upper blues as steep and the green transit to Ripper and Last Spike as long and narrow, although one progressing skier found Ripper excellent once there.

  • Skip Kill the Banker unless coverage is deep and soft and every caution sign agrees with what you can see.304445

    Multiple discussions describe it as exceptional only in perfect conditions and miserable or equipment-damaging when icy, thin or filled with breakable crud.

  • Do not buy First Tracks Breakfast Club expecting private access to North Bowl or Separate Reality before their public rope drops.17

    Participants describe about 45 minutes and two guided groomer laps before public opening; opinions conflict on value, with some recommending it after 20 cm for line avoidance and local guidance while others call it poor value.

  • Check upper-mountain cameras and operations even when Revelstoke town is socked in, because valley fog can sit below sunny Stoke and Ripper terrain.3246

    A February 2016 Liftlines trip report and an undated Call in Sick trip report describe both a sunny alpine above a mid-level cloud deck and persistent fog confined to the lower mountain.

  • During warm spring weather, remain on Stoke and Ripper until the end rather than testing the lower ski-out between laps.1214

    The summit can retain winter snow while the low-elevation descent becomes heavy slush or severe overnight freeze-thaw; this contrast has occurred even in February and March.

  • If fog is concentrated around Stoke, move to the Ripper side and use its spaced trees for definition before abandoning the day.4748

    One detailed January report found persistent fog at the base of Stoke but none on the Ripper side, while another specifically praised the Ripper trees in poor conditions.

  • On an extreme cold snap, verify lift status before joining the base queue: the upper gondola has delayed until roughly 10:00, and Ripper has slowed or closed near -20C.620

    A Teton Gravity Research thread in February 2023 and a Liftlines trip report in February 2026 record both behaviours. These are observed operating quirks rather than guaranteed thresholds, but they make a cold-morning status check especially valuable at a mountain with so little lift redundancy.

  • Ski Revelstoke's glades with a partner in continuous visual contact and carry a whistle on an accessible jacket zip.49

    An experienced skier described becoming inverted and pinned in a tree well until the whistle attracted help; other solo visitors restrict themselves to groomers and heavily travelled runs.

  • Look over every roll before committing in Stoke and Ripper trees, because inbounds terrain contains abrupt cliffs, open creeks and holes that are not always obvious from above.2950

    Riders report a ten-foot fall into an open creek in Ripper glades and cliff-outs near Critical Path and Separate Reality despite generally decent hazard signage.

  • Treat every resort-boundary gate as uncontrolled backcountry and do not exit without avalanche training, beacon, shovel, probe and a capable group.5152

    A 2023 Newschoolers report and a March 2026 r/BackcountrySkiing thread both describe experienced parties backing away from Revelstoke sidecountry even with full equipment, emphasizing that lift access does not make terrain avalanche-controlled.

  • Download the trail map and agree fixed regroup points before leaving the gondola, because cell service is absent across much of the mountain.53

    An r/Revelstoke thread in February 2022 reports Wi-Fi at Mackenzie Outpost and Revelation Lodge but cellular coverage only at the base, making phones unreliable for reuniting a separated group.

History

  1. 1885

    The Canadian Pacific Railway's transcontinental line is completed just outside Revelstoke, and the town is named for Lord Revelstoke, whose bank had bailed out the near-bankrupt CPR that same year.54

  2. 1915

    Scandinavian immigrants who brought skiing to the town build one of the first ski jumps in North America; Revelstoke-born jumper Nels Nelsen sets world distance records on it through the 1920s.54

  3. 1965

    A single two-person lift begins operating on the lower slopes of Mount Mackenzie, the start of a small ski area known as Powder Springs, decades before the modern resort.2

  4. 1990

    VIA Rail's transcontinental Canadian is rerouted away from Revelstoke; the town that the railway built has had no scheduled passenger train since.55

  5. 2005

    Northland Properties signs a development agreement to build a roughly CAD 1 billion resort on Mount Mackenzie.2

    Revelstoke Mountain Resort opens on December 21 with the Revelation Gondola and the Stoke high-speed quad.2

    The Ripper high-speed quad is added, and the gondola is extended down the hill to a new village base in December, taking the lift-served vertical to 1,710 m and overtaking Whistler Blackcomb's 1,610 m as the largest in North America.2

Questions

How many piste kilometres does Revelstoke have, and how much is easy?

The operator does not publish a kilometre figure, only 3,121 skiable acres across 75 runs split 12% easiest, 43% intermediate and 45% advanced/expert. Skiresort.com's independent measurement puts the marked network at 55 km, split 16 km easy, 18 km intermediate and 21 km difficult. Our own routing measurement finds 90.3 km of marked piste, well above either published figure, most likely because it counts the many named glade descents shown on the operator's own trail map as separate pistes.34

Is Revelstoke really the greatest lift-served vertical in North America?

Yes, on the operator's own figures: 1,713 m from the 512 m base to the top of the Stoke chair at 2,225 m, ahead of Whistler Blackcomb's 1,610 m. The claim has held since the Revelation Gondola was extended to the current village base in December 2008. Two higher points, Sub Peak at 2,340 m and the true summit of Mount Mackenzie at 2,456 m, are visible from the pistes but sit above lift service.12

Is Revelstoke good for beginners?

Not especially. The operator rates only 12% of its terrain easiest, and our own routing measurement finds just 29% of the network reachable from the base without descending something harder than an easy run. The dedicated learning terrain is at the Stellar chair; community advice for a progressing skier is to stay there and on Sally Alley and the groomed Ripper runs before attempting Stoke.14

How many lifts does Revelstoke have?

Five, by the operator's own count: the Revelation Gondola, the Stoke and Ripper high-speed quads, the Stellar fixed-grip quad and one magic carpet. That figure matches the four named lift lines plus a beginner carpet drawn on the operator's own current trail map. Some aggregators count 6 or 7, most likely from splitting the gondola's Mackenzie Outpost mid-station into a separate lift.1

What does a day ticket at Revelstoke cost?

For the 2026/27 season, the operator's window rate is CAD 220 for an adult in the December 24-March 14 peak window and CAD 199 in the surrounding early and late season. Youth (13-18) and seniors (65+) pay CAD 163 in peak season, a child (6-12) pays CAD 75, and a child aged 5 or under skis free. There is no lower fixed-price window ticket; the operator's dynamic two-tier pricing is the only day-ticket option.5

How far is Revelstoke from the nearest airport?

Kelowna International Airport, the operator's primary recommended gateway, is 199 km by road, about 2.5 hours. Calgary International Airport is 413 km over Rogers Pass, about 4.5 hours in clear conditions, and Vancouver is 631 km, about 7 hours. Rogers Pass can close without notice for avalanche control, so travellers connecting to a flight are advised to leave a spare day.15

Can you heli-ski or cat-ski at Revelstoke?

You can book both through the resort, but neither is skied on the lift-served mountain measured on this page. Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing flies into more than 500,000 acres of terrain immediately outside the resort's boundary. The resort's own "Cat Skiing Intro to Powder Program" pairs one day of instruction at Revelstoke Mountain Resort with a second day at Great Northern Snowcat Skiing's separate tenure, reached by a ferry crossing to Galena Bay.8910

Is the town of Revelstoke the same as the ski resort?

No. Revelstoke is a working railway town founded by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s, 8 km from the resort's own base by road, connected by a resort shuttle roughly every 20 minutes for CAD 2 a ride. Most accommodation, restaurants and the town's own railway heritage sites are downtown, not at the mountain; the resort base itself is a smaller, newer village built around the Revelation Gondola.5456
