Banff Sunshine Village is one of three SkiBig3 resorts inside Banff National Park, and the only one whose lift network crosses the Continental Divide from Alberta into British Columbia and back again. The operator counts 3,360 acres and 137 runs across three summits reached by one 18-minute gondola; our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 76 km of connected piste, well below skiresort.com's independently measured 109 km. Delirium Dive and the Wild West are gated freeride zones that need a beacon, shovel, probe and a similarly equipped partner. The upper mountain sits mostly above treeline and is often bitterly cold and wind-exposed, and there is no road past the day parking lot: the gondola is the only way up or down.1234567

The operator's own current-season trail map states a gondola-base elevation of 1,660 m (5,440 ft), a Sunshine Village mid-mountain elevation of 2,159 m (7,082 ft) where the lodges sit, and a Lookout Mountain summit of 2,730 m (8,954 ft); Wikipedia, skiresort.com and SkiBig3 all agree on the summit and base figures within a few metres. Our own routing graph finds its highest mapped node at about 2,718 m and its lowest at about 1,659 m, close to but not identical with the operator's figures: the graph's high point is the highest point in the mapped network, not necessarily the true summit.

Marketed vs measuredBanff Sunshine, like most North American resorts, states its size in acres rather than piste kilometres: the operator's own figures (repeated by Wikipedia and SkiBig3) list 3,360.6 acres (13.6 km²) and 137 runs, split roughly 15% beginner, 37% intermediate, 40% advanced and 7% expert. Skiresort.com's independent conversion measures the network at 109 km, split 25 km easy, 50 km intermediate and 34 km difficult. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 76 km of marked piste, close to a third below skiresort.com's total, which is the typical gap this site finds between a marketed acreage-based figure and a measured centre-line length.

The 8-person gondola (2001, rebuilt on the original 1980 system's tower alignment) is the only way to the upper Village, with a mid-station at Goat's Eye. Six high-speed quads serve most of the terrain: Goat's Eye Express (1995), the Great Divide Express (1996, replacing a slower Great Divide chair, and the only lift in Canada to cross a provincial border), Wolverine Express and Jackrabbit (2000), Standish Express (2003) and Strawberry Express (2010, built from a lift used at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics). Two heated 'bubble' chairs shelter riders on the way up rather than the terrain around them: Teepee Town Express (2015, Canada's first heated high-speed quad) and Super Angel Luxury Express (2024, a heated six-pack that replaced the original Angel Express). Two fixed-grip quads and two magic carpets complete the network. Skiresort.com's independent count finds 12 lifts rather than the operator's 13, most likely a difference in whether a short surface lift or carpet is counted.9

Banff Sunshine sells no fixed walk-up rate: adult day tickets are priced dynamically by date through the operator's own webstore, with aggregators quoting the 2025/26 range at roughly CA$140-170 depending on the date and how far ahead it is booked. On top of any lift ticket, Banff National Park charges its own daily entry fee, since the resort sits inside the park rather than beside it.

From Calgary International Airport, 135 km on the Trans-Canada Highway and the Sunshine access road, about 1h25 by the operator's own estimate. Guide
The 8-person gondola climbs 500 m from the day parking lot to the upper Village in about 18 minutes, with a mid-station at Goat's Eye. From there, lifts fan out to three separate summits rather than one continuous network: Goat's Eye Mountain and the Wild West freeride zone to the south, Lookout Mountain and the gated Delirium Dive to the north-east, and Mount Standish, reached through Teepee Town, further east again. The resort's own trail map is split into three sheets for exactly this reason.
Three mountains off one gondola
Goat's Eye Mountain, reached by its own Express quad, carries long groomed cruisers such as Sunshine Coast alongside the ungated South Side Chutes and the gated Wild West freeride zone. Lookout Mountain, on the original side of the resort, is reached by the Great Divide Express and Teepee Town Express, and its ridge holds the gate into Delirium Dive. Mount Standish, the furthest sector, is reached through Teepee Town via the Standish and Wawa quads, and carries Wawa's short, tree-lined runs alongside Standish's more open bump fields. None of the three summits is reachable from another without descending back toward the Village first.18
Delirium Dive and Wild West: gated, not casual
Both of Sunshine's freeride zones sit behind a locked, beacon-activated gate rather than an open boundary rope. The Delirium Dive gate, at the top of the Great Divide Express (also known as the Continental Divide chair), only opens once it detects an avalanche transceiver, and skiers must pass through it one at a time so it can read each signal individually. SkiBig3's own guide to the zone lists the requirement in full: a digital transceiver, a metal shovel and a collapsible probe, actively understood rather than merely carried, plus a similarly equipped partner; solo entry is refused. The standard line, Dive Proper, carries no mandatory cliff drop and is reached down a staircase from the gate, though unmarked rocks and cliff bands sit throughout the zone, and the steeper Bre-X entrance has pitches where a fall is best avoided. The Wild West, on Goat's Eye, carries the same equipment and partner rule.410
Straddling the Continental Divide
Sunshine Village sits on the Continental Divide of the Americas, and part of its lift network crosses from Alberta into British Columbia and back within the ski area boundary. The Great Divide Express is the only chairlift in Canada to fly in two provinces: it crosses into British Columbia around tower 16 and returns to Alberta by tower 18. Most of the skiable network, including the Village and all three summits, sits inside Banff National Park in Alberta; the resort's western and southern edge reaches into British Columbia's Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, and the operator credits this straddling position with catching more snow than its Alberta-side neighbours.11112
Cold, wind and limited shelter
Sunshine's upper mountain sits mostly above treeline and exposed to wind off the Divide. A published review of a multi-day visit describes wind chill on Lookout and the Great Divide reaching levels the writer called unbearable, with a single gondola creating a bottleneck on cold, busy mornings. The Wolverine pod, lower and more tree-covered, is the reviewer's recommendation for a day too cold for the open bowls. Community reports separately name Divide, Wawa and Angel among the coldest lift rides in the region; the heated bubble chairs at Teepee Town and Super Angel shelter riders on the chair itself without sheltering the terrain around them.51314

No scheduled passenger rail serves Banff Sunshine Village for a day of skiing. The operator's own free shuttle bus connects from Banff, and several private operators (Banff Airporter, Brewster Express, Banff Transportation) run from Calgary International Airport into Banff.

Mad Trapper's Public House
In the Old Sunshine Lodge, a 1928 Canadian Pacific Railway cabin originally built for the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and now Sunshine's oldest building. Serves pub food and drinks from 10:30 to 23:00. A September 2025 r/Banff thread calls the food poor value and notes that every on-mountain outlet is controlled by the resort, though it and an older March 2022 r/Banff thread both rate it above the Village's other options.24252627

A January 2025 r/Banff thread puts ordinary gondola waits at 1 to 10 minutes most days, while an October 2024 r/snowboarding thread describes waits up to 30 minutes around 09:00-10:00; both point to parking, not the lifts themselves, as the cause of the longest delays.

On a powder morning, take the first gondola and unload at Goat's Eye rather than continuing to the Village, because many skiers ride straight past the mid-station.30

If driving leaves you far down the parking area, use the resort's parking-lot bus instead of walking the road in ski boots, including for the afternoon return to your car.32

Unless taking the black routes left of Wawa, riders may have to hike back toward other Village lifts; the green from Angel also has a mid-run flat that punishes anyone who checks speed too early.

An undated snowHeads thread, a December 2025 r/Banff thread and a February 2025 r/Banff thread all describe the narrow route becoming crowded and scraped, icy or slushy, and warn that leaving the groomed track can put a skier among steep banks and trees.

Take the free first-day mountain tour, timed at 11:45 in front of the ski school by a December 2025 r/Banff thread, instead of learning Sunshine's disconnected lift layout by trial and error.17
A visiting Whistler skier on that thread specifically credited the tour with making the flats, uphill links and sectors much easier to navigate afterward; reconfirm the daily meeting time.

The standard line has no mandatory air and is often compared with the South Side Chutes for difficulty, but shallow Rockies coverage leaves concealed rocks and more consequential alternatives nearby, so scope before exploring.

To reach Milky Way, descend the Dive stairs and continue along the ridge beyond the Galaxy chutes on the patrol-established bootpack rather than dropping early.54
The traverse is not short and may include skiable sections plus exposed, wind-scoured walking; it also provides a chance to inspect the Galaxy entrances from below the ridge.

Questions
How many piste kilometers does Banff Sunshine Village have?
The operator states its size in acres rather than kilometres: 3,360.6 acres (13.6 km²) across 137 runs, split roughly 15% beginner, 37% intermediate, 40% advanced and 7% expert. Skiresort.com's independent conversion measures the network at 109 km, split 25 km easy, 50 km intermediate and 34 km difficult. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 76 km of marked piste, close to a third below skiresort.com's figure, which is the typical gap this site finds between a marketed acreage-based total and a measured centre-line length.123
Are Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise and Mt. Norquay connected by ski lift?
No. The three resorts share the SkiBig3 lift ticket, valid for 1 to 13 days with a free shuttle between them, but each is a separate ski area with no piste or lift joining one to another. Getting from Sunshine to Lake Louise or Norquay means the shuttle or a car, not skiing across.559
Is there a cost besides the lift ticket at Banff Sunshine Village?
Yes. Sunshine sits inside Banff National Park, so a Parks Canada park entry fee applies on top of any lift ticket: C$12.25 per adult per day, C$10.75 for a senior, free for anyone 17 or under, or C$24.50 for a family or group of up to seven people in one vehicle, at 2026 rates. A lift ticket does not include park admission.6
Can I drive to Banff Sunshine Village, or do I need the gondola?
You can only drive as far as the day-use parking lot at the gondola base; the access road above it is restricted to Sunshine Village and contractor vehicles. The 8-person gondola covers the remaining 500 m of climb to the upper Village in about 18 minutes, and it is also the only way back down at the end of the day.71
What do I need to ski Delirium Dive?
A digital avalanche transceiver, a metal shovel, a collapsible probe and a partner who is equipped the same way. The gate at the top of the Great Divide Express only opens once it detects a beacon, and skiers must pass through it one at a time; solo entry is refused. The standard line, Dive Proper, has no mandatory cliff drop, though unmarked rocks and cliff bands sit throughout the zone.410
Does Banff Sunshine Village straddle the Alberta-British Columbia border?
Yes. The Great Divide Express is the only chairlift in Canada to fly in two provinces, crossing from Alberta into British Columbia around tower 16 and back into Alberta by tower 18. Most of the ski area, including the Village and all three summits, sits in Alberta's Banff National Park; the resort's western and southern edge reaches into British Columbia's Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park.11112
