The verdict

Breckenridge is a five-peak, single-ticket Colorado giant built around a real 19th-century mining town rather than a purpose-built base village. Peaks 6 through 10 are lift-linked into one connected network, topped by the Imperial Express SuperChair, marketed as the highest chairlift in North America. The operator counts 2,908 acres and 187 trails; our own measurement of the connected network finds about 118 km of ski terrain, close to the app's own corpus figure for this graph. The catch is the crowd: Breckenridge sits about two hours from Denver on I-70, a drive shared by every other Summit County resort, and both the highway and the base-area lifts carry the day-trip traffic that comes with that.1234

  • Budget skiers: window-rate adult tickets passed $300 for the first time in the 2025/26 season, among the more expensive tickets in Vail Resorts' own portfolio

The operator's own mountain-info page gives a base of 9,600 ft (2,926 m) and headlines a summit of 12,998 ft (3,962 m), the true top of Peak 8. That summit is reached only by a short hike beyond the top of the Imperial Express SuperChair, which the same page separately names as the highest operating chairlift in North America at 12,840 ft; the precise metric conversion of that figure, 3,914 m, is the one used here as the highest lift-served point, following the convention used across this site. Skiresort.com's own independent figures agree closely: base 2,926 m, summit 3,914 m, vertical 988 m. Wikipedia's account of the 2005 Imperial Express opening rounds the same lift-top elevation to 3,910 m, which is within a handful of metres of both the app's own corpus figure for this graph (3,910 m) and our own routing graph's highest node in the connected network (3,912 m per the sector breakdown) — all four figures describing the same point on the mountain to within rounding.

Marketed vs measuredThe operator does not publish a running piste-length total. Its own mountain-info page gives 2,908 skiable acres and 187 trails, split 11% beginner, 31% intermediate, 24% advanced and 34% expert by acreage, and separately notes 40% of that acreage sits above treeline. Skiresort.com converts this into a running length of 153 km, split 28 km easy, 60 km intermediate and 65 km difficult (18/39/43%); that percentage split differs from the operator's own because skiresort.com's three-band system folds the operator's separate advanced and expert grades together differently than a straight sum suggests. Our own measurement of the routing graph, almost all of it (116.3 of 118.2 km) inside a single connected component spanning all five peaks, finds 118.2 km of marked piste: about 23% below skiresort.com's converted figure, and about 7% above the app's own corpus figure of 110 km for this graph, comfortably inside the variance seen at the other US resorts measured this way (Vail 205 vs 204.7 km, Copper Mountain 115 vs 115.2 km, Steamboat 124 vs 124.4 km). Some of the shortfall against the marketed 153 km is very likely the above-treeline bowl terrain: acreage that counts toward the operator's marketed total but is open, largely unmarked alpine terrain rather than a discrete named piste a routing graph traces as a line.

The operator and skiresort.com both count 35 lifts, split as one gondola (BreckConnect), thirteen high-speed chairs, six fixed-grip chairs, five surface lifts (four drag lifts plus the El Dorado rope tow) and ten magic carpets. Every named lift the app's own corpus associates with this graph, Colorado SuperChair, Independence SuperChair, Kensho SuperChair, Imperial SuperChair, Falcon SuperChair, Rocky Mountain SuperChair, Zendo Chair, Beaver Run SuperChair and QuickSilver SuperChair, is confirmed as a real, currently operating Breckenridge lift and none belongs to a neighbouring resort. Our own independently ingested graph names 29 lifts directly plus three more tagged only with the generic OpenStreetMap label "Chair" rather than a proper name, almost certainly the short fixed-grip doubles skiresort.com lists as C-Chair, E-Chair and 6-Chair; three named lifts (Falcon, FIVE and Imperial SuperChairs) also carry a short extra connector edge under 30 m each, which may or may not represent a genuine second lift segment. Depending on how those are counted, our own graph brackets 32 to 35 lift lines, consistent with both the app's own corpus figure of 34 for this graph and the operator's published 35, rather than pointing to a real gap. A lift count this high for a network measuring around 118 km is not itself a discrepancy: ten of the 35 lifts are magic carpets and five more are short drag lifts or a rope tow, clustered around the five separate peak base areas and their own beginner zones, so more than a third of the lift count serves short, low-vertical beginner terrain rather than opening new descents.1

Piste colour is set by each resort under its own rules, so a red in one country is a blue in another. Measured gradient is comparable everywhere.

Five numbered peaks, Peak 6 through Peak 10, are linked into one connected, one-ticket network above the town of Breckenridge, tied together by the BreckConnect Gondola and a chain of interconnecting lifts rather than sold as separate areas. This page covers that whole lift-linked network, which our own routing graph confirms sits in a single connected component from Peak 6's high bowls to Peak 10's glades.

One ticket, one connected network across five peaks

The operator markets Breckenridge as "five peaks, one incredible mountain" rather than as a lift union of separate areas, and our own routing graph agrees: its single largest connected component holds 118.9 km of ski terrain (116.3 km of it groomed piste, the rest ungroomed routes) running from Peak 6's summit down to Peak 10's base, on 65.6 km of lift line. Six small, isolated fragments elsewhere in the graph add up to only 7.8 km combined, none over 3.5 km, almost certainly hike-to bowl terrain not stitched to the main network by a mapped lift or piste. The BreckConnect Gondola, opened in 2007, ties the town to the Peak 8 and Peak 7 base areas; skiers based at Peak 9 or Peak 10 reach the rest of the mountain over ridge-line chairs rather than the gondola.135

Peak 8: the historic core, and the highest lift in North America

Peak 8 has been Breckenridge's base since the resort opened in 1961 and still carries its flagship terrain, from beginner runs at the base to the Imperial Express SuperChair above treeline. Opened in 2005, Imperial Express tops out at 12,840 ft (3,914 m), which the operator and independent coverage both describe as the highest operating chairlift in North America, and cut the hike into Imperial Bowl from about 45 minutes to a 3-minute ride. The true summit of Peak 8, at 12,998 ft (3,962 m), sits above even that lift and is reached only on foot.15

Peak 9 and Peak 10: town-adjacent groomers to steep glades

Peak 9, the closest terrain to downtown Breckenridge and home to the Beaver Run base area, carries most of the mountain's dedicated learning terrain, rated beginner to intermediate on the operator's own peak-by-peak breakdown. Peak 10, reached by the six-person Falcon SuperChair (upgraded from a fixed-grip quad in 2017), sits toward the other end of the range: the operator rates it advanced overall, with steep groomers, natural glades and mogul terrain, though Peak 8 and Peak 6 each reach the operator's top expert grade as well.15

Peak 6 and Peak 7: the 2013 above-treeline expansion

Peak 7 opened in 2002 around the Independence SuperChair, gained its own small base area from 2008, and was joined in 2021 by the Freedom SuperChair. Peak 6, Breckenridge's largest expansion in over a decade when it opened in 2013, has no dedicated base area of its own and is reached via Peak 7; it is served by the Zendo Chair and the Kensho SuperChair and reaches above-treeline bowl terrain the operator calls the Six Senses. Between them, Peak 6 and Peak 7 hold the bulk of the resort's advanced and expert above-treeline skiing, and together with Peak 8's Imperial Bowl account for the 40% of Breckenridge's acreage the operator lists as above treeline.51

  • If you must load Quicksilver at Peak 9, join before 08:30 and leave the pod after that first ride, because ski-school traffic around 09:00 and 12:30 makes roughly 10:00–11:00 especially slow.910

    A r/Breckenridge thread on the Quicksilver lift (April 2025) suggests walking uphill to Beaver Run, using the small platter first, or trying Quicksilver's uphill loading side once the main queue has formed; a separate March 2025 r/Breckenridge thread on base/lift 9 congestion makes the same point.

  • Once uphill on a busy day, avoid descending to the Peak 7, 8 or 9 bases until about 13:00 and use upper lifts or E-Chair instead.1112

  • If Peak 9 is your intended start, reserve Beaver Run parking ahead because it is considered the most convenient lot and advance pricing was reported far below drive-up pricing.2422

    A March 2025 r/Breckenridge thread on the easiest bowls and a February 2026 thread asking about Peak 6 both describe the open bowl beside Kensho or Intuition as spacious and relatively mellow, though wind, chop and variable snow can make its blue-marked routes far harder than the colour suggests.

  • Ski Windows, Inferno or Mineshaft from E-Chair when natural snow is good, but inspect conditions first because regulars disagree sharply about how often this north-facing pod remains worthwhile.1311

How big is Breckenridge, and is it really one connected ski area?

Yes. Breckenridge markets five numbered peaks, Peak 6 through Peak 10, as one lift-linked, one-ticket network, and our own measurement of the routing graph confirms it: 118.9 km of ski terrain, 116.3 km of it groomed piste, sits in a single connected component from Peak 6's summit to Peak 10's base, against only 7.8 km combined in small, isolated fragments elsewhere. The operator lists 2,908 skiable acres and 187 trails; skiresort.com converts that to 153 km of piste.123

Is the Imperial Express really the highest chairlift in North America?

It is the highest operating chairlift, at 12,840 ft (3,914 m), a title it took from Loveland Ski Area's Chair 9 when it opened in 2005. Breckenridge's marketed summit of 12,998 ft (3,962 m) is higher still, but that point is Peak 8's true summit, reached only by a short hike beyond the top of the lift, not served by any chair.15

How do I get to Breckenridge from Denver?

About 104 miles (167 km) by car: I-70 west to exit 203 at Frisco, then south on Highway 9 into Breckenridge, roughly 2 hours in clear conditions. Expect longer over Christmas/New Year, spring break or when I-70 closes at the Eisenhower Tunnel for weather; there is no passenger rail to Breckenridge, and travellers without a car typically use a scheduled shuttle or rental car from Denver International Airport.1

What does a lift ticket to Breckenridge cost?

Breckenridge uses fully dynamic pricing rather than one fixed rate. Reported walk-up adult prices for the 2025/26 season have ranged from about $159 on a quiet weekday up to $321 over the Christmas-to-New-Year peak, the first time Breckenridge's own peak price passed $300. Buying online at least a week ahead is reported to save up to 20% against the same date's window rate; the Epic Pass covers Breckenridge with no blackout dates.4

Is Breckenridge good for beginners?

It has genuine beginner terrain, concentrated on Peak 9 and served by ten magic carpets across the resort's base areas, but the operator's own difficulty split rates only 11% of its 2,908 acres beginner-graded, and the town and lowest lifts already sit above 2,900 m, an altitude several trip reports flag as a real adjustment for first-time visitors.1

When does the Breckenridge season run?

The 2025/26 season opened on schedule on 7 November 2025 and the operator announced a closing day of 19 April 2026. There is no glacier, so both ends of the season depend on natural snowfall backed by snowmaking; opening day 2025 ran largely on machine-made snow over the Springmeier trail.50
