Winter Park is one lift-linked, one-ticket ski area on five named territories: Winter Park, Mary Jane, Vasquez Ridge, Vasquez Cirque and the terrain off the Panoramic Express, including Parsenn Bowl. Mary Jane is marketed hard enough as its own thing, mogul terrain, tree skiing, a separate base parking lot, that visitors often assume it is a different resort; our own ingest of the routing graph finds a single connected network of 391 nodes with no disconnected sector, so it is one mountain on one ticket. The operator counts 3,081 acres and 166 trails; skiresort.com converts that to 143 km, close to our own measured 118.8 km. It is also the only major Colorado resort still owned by a city: the City and County of Denver has held the land since 1940, with Alterra operating it under a long-standing lease.1234
Goes well for
- Bump and tree skiing: Mary Jane's terrain is graded mostly black and double-black, and 55% of the resort's marketed piste length sits in the two hardest categories.
- Skiing without a car: the Winter Park Express runs direct from Denver Union Station to a stop at the resort's own base area in about two hours, one of very few US resorts reachable this way.
- A full day without repeating terrain: five named territories and our own measurement finds a single connected network rather than a patchwork of disconnected pods.
Goes badly for
- Budget skiers: online pre-purchase adult day tickets ran $272 to $282 for 2025/26, dynamic pricing pushes peak dates higher, and the resort's new Reserve Pass adds a $999 to $2,499 tier purely for priority lift access and early loading.
- Skiers who assume Mary Jane is a separate mountain: it shares the same ticket, the same lift network and, per our own routing graph, the same connected piste network as Winter Park proper; treating it as an optional add-on misses most of the resort's advanced terrain.
- Nervous or first-week skiers on the Mary Jane side: the beginner-graded terrain is concentrated in Discovery Park near the Winter Park base, and only a small share of the whole network is reachable without crossing harder-graded ground.

The operator's own statistics page gives a base of 9,000 ft (2,743 m) and a summit of 12,060 ft (3,676 m) atop The Cirque, a 3,060 ft (933 m) vertical rise; skiresort.com's independent figures round to the same base and summit. Our own routing graph, built from the OpenStreetMap network of pistes and lifts, finds its lowest and highest mapped nodes at 2,775 m and 3,657 m, a modest difference from the operator's figures consistent with the base area and true summit not sitting exactly on a mapped piste or lift node.

Marketed vs measuredWinter Park publishes its terrain in acres, not piste kilometres: 3,081 skiable acres across 166 trails, split into five bands (8% beginner, 18% intermediate, 19% advanced, 52% most difficult, 3% expert only) that group to roughly 8% easy, 37% intermediate-or-advanced and 55% difficult-or-expert. Skiresort.com's independent conversion to piste kilometres, 143 km split 11/53/79, works out to almost exactly the same three-way split (8%/37%/55%), an unusually close match between an acreage-based and a length-based measurement. Our own routing measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 118.8 km of marked piste, about 17% below skiresort.com's figure, in line with the gap this site typically finds between a marketed and a measured total, and close to the SkiAllDay app corpus figure of 112 km for this same graph.

The operator's own count is 23: one gondola, three six-passenger chairs, six high-speed quads, three fixed-grip triples, six fixed-grip doubles, two magic-carpet conveyors, one T-bar and one rope tow, by our reading of the operator's and Wikipedia's published breakdowns. Our own routing graph, ingested from OpenStreetMap and matching the SkiAllDay app corpus figure of 25, finds two additional named lift lines: the Village Cabriolet, a covered pedestrian gondola linking the base areas rather than a ski lift, and a conveyor serving the tubing hill. Neither carries a skier onto the piste network, which is why the operator's own count of 23 is used here.1

Winter Park uses dynamic, date-based pricing rather than one fixed rate. Online pre-purchase adult day tickets were quoted at $272 for a weekday and $282 for a weekend date in early October 2025, with the operator's own site advertising savings of up to 40% for booking 48 hours ahead and flexible multi-day Flex Packs from about $85 to $105 a day. For 2025/26 the resort also introduced a Reserve Pass, sold in limited numbers: $999 for priority lift-line access plus early loading, or $2,499 with reserved parking added, with priority access starting December 15, 2025 and parking benefits from the start of the season. As sold for 2026/27, the same product gives all-day priority lift-line access on five lifts (the Gondola, Explorer Express, Super Gauge Express, Olympia Express and Panoramic Express), plus Early Ups, loading up to an hour before the public lift opening, on the Gondola and Explorer Express, Monday to Friday.

Winter Park sits on US-40 about 67 miles (108 km) west of Denver, over Berthoud Pass rather than through the Eisenhower Tunnel corridor used by the I-70 resorts, which keeps it clear of the worst I-70 ski-weekend traffic. Colorado's Traction Law, in force September 1 to May 31, requires all-wheel or four-wheel drive with winter-rated tires, or chains, over the pass.

Guide
Five named territories, Winter Park, Mary Jane, Vasquez Ridge, Vasquez Cirque and the terrain off the Panoramic Express (including Parsenn Bowl), share one lift network and one ticket. Our own ingest of the routing graph, 391 nodes and 2,104 edges, finds a single connected sector rather than separate pods, confirming that a skier can move between all five without removing skis.
Winter Park: the groomed side, and where most people start
The Gondola and the Village Cabriolet rise from the main base, feeding groomed cruising terrain and Discovery Park, the resort's dedicated beginner area near the base of the Arrow and Discovery lifts. This side carries most of the operator's easier-graded acreage and the Sunspot mountaintop lodge, at 10,700 ft (3,261 m), reached by riding the Gondola to its top station.14
Mary Jane: one ticket, not a separate resort
Mary Jane opened to the public on January 10, 1976, adding roughly 350 acres and increasing the ski area's size by about 80% in one step; it has its own base parking lot and its own lifts, Challenger and Super Gauge Express among them, which is why visitors sometimes talk about it as if it were a different mountain. It is not: the same lift ticket covers both sides, and our own routing graph finds Mary Jane's lifts and pistes joined to Winter Park's in a single connected network with no separate sector. Mary Jane is graded mostly black and double-black, built around steep, heavily mogulled fall-line pistes and glades, and turned 50 in the 2025/26 season.634
Vasquez Ridge and Parsenn Bowl: intermediate terrain, and the resort's longest run
Vasquez Ridge opened in 1986 and adds intermediate cruising and mogul terrain on the resort's southern side. Parsenn Bowl, reached from the top of the Panoramic Express, carries the operator's longest marketed run at 4.9 miles (7.9 km): a long, largely green-groomed descent that is unusual for sitting mostly above the treeline while still being graded easy to intermediate. Our own routing graph finds a slightly longer 8.3 km unbroken descent somewhere in the network, 881 m of vertical without a lift ride, which the page shows alongside the operator's own figure rather than in place of it.13
Eagle Wind and Vasquez Cirque: the resort's hardest terrain
The Eagle Wind lift and its glades opened for the 2006/07 season on land the Arapaho people knew by the same name, all of it graded black diamond and funnelling back to the lift's own base. Vasquez Cirque, 399 acres of double-black terrain with a 2,260 ft (689 m) vertical drop, opened to skiing in 1997 and is reached by hiking along the ridge from the top of Parsenn Bowl through a gate that is closed whenever conditions do not allow it; the operator rates it 75% most-difficult and 25% expert-only, and its high point, at 12,060 ft (3,676 m), is the resort's official summit.471
A city-owned mountain
The City and County of Denver has owned the land since 1940, when Denver Parks and Recreation built the original ski area to give city residents a mountain reachable by rail. Denver leased operations to the Winter Park Recreational Association, which in turn brought in Intrawest as operator from 2002; when Alterra Mountain Company acquired Intrawest in 2018, it inherited the same lease, and Denver has retained ownership throughout. No other resort on Colorado's Front Range, and few in the US, are run this way.4

By train
The Winter Park Express runs direct from Denver Union Station to a stop at the resort's own base area, with an additional stop in Fraser, taking about two hours ten minutes each way. For 2025/26 it operated Thursday to Sunday from January 8 to March 29, plus holiday dates from December 19, with 57 round trips in total; fares started at $9 one-way for an adult. It is one of very few US ski resorts reachable directly by passenger rail from a major city, a legacy of the Moffat Tunnel route the resort was built around in 1940.

An October 2023 r/icecoast thread on a first trip out West describes one visitor getting stuck in difficult terrain while searching for the three-story Topher's hut, and an April 2024 r/skiing thread on good first-timer runs separately identifies it as an unmarked double-black glade.

The same February 2024 r/COsnow thread contains conflicting reports: one closure preserved excellent powder in sheltered trees, but another reopening produced wind-scoured upper terrain while Challenger and Looking Glass still held untouched lines.

Before taking a marginal member into the Cirque, test them on Derailer, Trestle and a steep Fireberry Glade entry, or on far-right Eagle Wind and Belle Fourche.45

Questions
Is Mary Jane a separate ski resort from Winter Park?
No. Mary Jane has its own base parking lot and its own lifts, which is why it is often talked about as if it were separate, but it shares the same lift ticket and, per our own ingest of the routing graph, the same connected piste network as Winter Park proper: 391 nodes with no disconnected sector. A ticket bought at either base works at both.34
How big is Winter Park, and how hard is the terrain?
The operator counts 3,081 skiable acres across 166 trails, split 8% beginner, 18% intermediate, 19% advanced, 52% most difficult and 3% expert only. Skiresort.com converts that to 143 km of piste, split almost exactly the same way: 11 km easy, 53 km intermediate, 79 km difficult. Our own measurement of the OpenStreetMap network finds 118.8 km of marked piste.123
Is it true that the City of Denver owns Winter Park?
Yes, uniquely among major Colorado resorts. The City and County of Denver has owned the land since 1940 and still does; it leases operation to the Winter Park Recreational Association, which brought in Intrawest as operator in 2002 and, since Alterra Mountain Company acquired Intrawest in 2018, has Alterra running the resort day to day under the same lease.4
Can you get to Winter Park by train from Denver?
The Winter Park Express runs direct from Denver Union Station to a stop at the resort's own base area, with an additional stop in Fraser, in about two hours each way. For 2025/26 it ran Thursday to Sunday from January 8 to March 29, plus holiday dates from December 19, 57 round trips in total, with one-way adult fares starting at $9.49
What does a lift ticket cost at Winter Park, and what is the Reserve Pass?
Online pre-purchase adult day tickets were quoted at $272 for a weekday and $282 for a weekend date in early October 2025; pricing is dynamic and rises further on peak dates. For 2025/26 the resort also introduced a Reserve Pass, $999 or $2,499 with reserved parking, sold separately from a lift ticket for priority lift-line access and early loading on select lifts.58
What is Vasquez Cirque, and how do you get there?
Vasquez Cirque is 399 acres of double-black terrain reached by hiking along the ridge from the top of Parsenn Bowl, through a gate that only opens when conditions allow; its high point, 12,060 ft (3,676 m), is the resort's official summit. It opened to skiing in 1997 and is rated 75% most-difficult and 25% expert-only by the operator.471
