Fellhorn/Kanzelwand Oberstdorf/Riezlern

Reach the Kanzelwandbahn around 07:50–08:00 for the 08:30 first gondola, then lap the Kanzelwand valley run or Zwerenalp until the Fellhorn link opens.²⁰²³²⁴

Early reports describe the long valley run as clear and excellent before traffic arrives; in January 2025 the cross-border connection did not open until 09:00.

Avoid Fellhorn/Kanzelwand on sunny weekends and during the last week of February into early March if uncrowded skiing matters.⁶¹⁴

Local and English-language contributors repeatedly call this the valley's busiest mountain; holiday and weekend access from southern Germany makes the difference larger than British or French school dates suggest.

Use the Kanzelwandbahn single-rider lane when the main gondola queue builds, particularly when returning from other Kleinwalsertal sectors in the afternoon.²⁵

A January holiday report called Kanzelwandbahn the longest lift queue of the circuit but said the single-rider entrance repeatedly rescued the schedule.

Consider Easter Monday or the final operating day for unusually quiet Fellhorn/Kanzelwand skiing while much of the core terrain is still open.²⁶²⁷

Closing-day reports found almost full core operations and waits of only zero to two minutes, although warm Fellhorn pistes could be completely soft by about 11:00.

If parked at Fellhorn, do not leave the See-Eck return until the final rush on a peak day.²⁸

Several experienced visitors choose Riezlern specifically because the first useful terrain is reached faster and the day can finish on skis instead of with a gondola download.

When the parking directly beneath Kanzelwandbahn is full, try the Breitachbrücke parking area before abandoning the Riezlern start.²¹

A local-season report found the lift-base lot full while Breitachbrücke was only about one-third occupied.

Buy the lift ticket at the Ideallift ticket point and then continue to Kanzelwandbahn when the main Riezlern ticket windows look busy.³⁰

The frequent bus from Oberstdorf makes a car unnecessary, but leave a generous buffer for the return train on peak days.¹⁴²⁵

In flat light, use the Familienabfahrt on the Fellhorn side for better definition, then leave its lower section once temperatures rise.²¹

A detailed report called it consistently useful in diffuse visibility but found the part below roughly 1,500 metres substantially slushier.

Seek out the black Branntweinpiste beside See-Eck when it is open; experienced reporters rate it among the most rewarding marked runs at Fellhorn.²⁷

It is easier to miss than the high-capacity Möser pistes and may close before the main terrain late in the season.

Do not automatically reject the lower Fellhorn descent when it is designated as a ski route: it can be quieter and hold a better surface than the scraped upper piste.³²

This came from a low-snow New Year's report, so it is a conditions-dependent tactic and not permission to enter a closed route.

If there is a realistic chance you will transfer from Söllereck to Fellhorn/Kanzelwand, buy the wider Oberstdorf–Kleinwalsertal pass at the outset.³³

One skier was sold a Söllereck-only ticket on the cashier's recommendation and later had to stop and pay the difference to upgrade.

The Panoramarestaurant at Kanzelwand summit station has historically been the easier indoor lunch stop when Fellhorn is crowded.³²³⁴

For food at the end of a Fellhorn day, check the Fellhornstube at the valley station before driving back toward Oberstdorf.³⁵

A local forum contributor said Fellhorn staff regularly ate there and specifically praised the kitchen; the recommendation dates from around 2019, so check that the same operation is still running.

Do not mistake the wider Oberstdorf–Kleinwalsertal ticket area for one continuous ski circuit: Söllereck is standalone and requires a bus transfer.¹⁴²⁴

Fellhorn and Kanzelwand are the directly linked pair; the valley lifts and Ifen also involve walking or bus connections.

Do not bring a timid beginner expecting an extensive gentle-blue network across the existing resort; historically most useful through-routes have been red and some pitches are steeper than the map suggests.¹⁴¹⁵¹⁷

English advice conflicts somewhat—one snowboard instructor preferred Fellhorn or Ifen for learners—but other regulars caution families about the steepness; the planned 2026/27 blue loop may improve this.

Do not trust the interactive piste status blindly during marginal snow or the final weeks; inspect webcams and the actual lift setup.²⁷³⁶

Reports found Kessler and Schwand shown as operating after they were de-roped or surrounded by bare ground, and a January 2025 status briefly marked visibly impossible routes open.

Never copy skiers bypassing a See-Eck queue down the unsigned forest road toward Fellhorn unless it is an officially open route.²⁸

A closed Fellhorn valley run can be genuinely snowless rather than conservatively roped, so plan for a gondola download and its holiday queue.³⁷

Check wind operations before crossing to the opposite country and never depend on Fellhorn as a late-afternoon return route during a storm.³⁸³⁶

Strong wind has closed Kanzelwandbahn and its chairs, while a January 2025 skier found the Fellhorn connection shut by 15:00 and had to descend to Riezlern instead.

If the high Fellhorn/Kanzelwand sector closes for wind, salvage the day on Schwandlift, Kesslerlift, Parsenn and Heuberg rather than waiting at the base.³⁶

Do not navigate from an old lift map: the Bierenwangbahn is being removed as the new Scheidtobel installation takes over its relief and linking roles.¹⁹¹⁷

Current discussions say the Bierenwang lift has been sold and the old Scheidtobel equipment dismantled, so familiar transfer and repeat-lap patterns will change.
