Deer Valley is Alterra's ski-only resort in Park City, sold on the Ikon Pass, which roughly doubled in size for the 2025/26 season: 4,300 skiable acres across the original Empire and Flagstaff terrain plus the new East Village expansion, reached from a base near Jordanelle Reservoir by the 3-mile East Village Express Gondola. No snowboards have been allowed since it opened in 1981. It sits minutes from Park City Mountain in the same town, but the two resorts share no lift, run or pass.1234
Goes well for
- Confident intermediates who want groomed mileage: 44% of the mapped terrain is intermediate, the largest of the three bands, spread across six connected peaks after the expansion.
- Skiers who want a quiet lift line without a snowboard crowd: Deer Valley has capped daily skier numbers and banned snowboarding since it opened in 1981, one of only three US resorts that still does.
- Families and first-timers who value service over steepness: ski valet, dedicated learning zones on five of the six mountains, and no lift-line jostling from riders.
Goes badly for
- Budget skiers: a peak-day adult ticket ran $329 for 2025/26, among the highest in North America, and access requires a full-price Ikon Pass rather than the cheaper Ikon Base tier.
- Snowboarders: banned resort-wide since opening, and neither a lift ticket nor an Ikon Pass bought for Deer Valley is any use on a board here.
- Skiers chasing the steepest lift-served terrain in the Wasatch: the mapped split is only 21% difficult, and Deer Valley's hardest runs (Daly Chutes, the bump lines under Lady Morgan) are shorter and less committing than Park City Mountain's Jupiter Peak bowls or the Cottonwood Canyons resorts twenty minutes south.

Deer Valley's own June 2026 Expanded Excellence update gives the resort-wide range as a 9,570 ft (2,917 m) summit at Empire Peak down to a 6,450 ft (1,966 m) low point, a 3,120 ft (951 m) vertical span. That low point is new: it belongs to the East Village base near Jordanelle Reservoir, opened with the 2025/26 expansion. The resort's long-standing FAQ page still cites the older Snow Park base figure of 6,570 ft (2,003 m), the historic entrance used before East Village existed, which is higher, not lower, and is now not the resort's lowest skiable point. Marketed vs measuredDeer Valley publishes its terrain as 4,300+ skiable acres across 200+ trails rather than a piste-km figure. Skiresort.com's own measurement puts the network at about 202 km, split 72/90/40 km across easy, intermediate and difficult; that 35/44/21 split matches Wikipedia's infobox trail-count percentages exactly, though Deer Valley's own FAQ page separately states 27% of runs are beginner terrain, a figure that does not reconcile with either and may not yet reflect the expanded beginner terrain at East Village. OpenStreetMap records no separate Deer Valley ski area at all: one entry named Park City Mountain Resort covers 439 km and binds every lift in the district to it, Deer Valley's Empire, Ruby, Lady Morgan, Northside and Sultan chairs included, along with the whole East Village network near Jordanelle Reservoir, a separately owned resort on a different pass with no on-snow link to Park City Mountain. So the split is ours: each lift is assigned to the resort that operates it, from the two operators' own published rosters, and every piste to whichever side's lift network it lies nearest. The measured figures below therefore rest on a boundary we drew rather than one the data ships with. Two independent checks support it. The split keeps exactly the 31 named lifts Deer Valley operates for 2025/26 and drops all 38 of Park City Mountain's; and the network that remains spans 1,964 m to 2,918 m, within 2 m of the operator's own 1,966 m East Village base and within 1 m of Empire Peak's published 2,917 m summit.

Deer Valley's own count for 2025/26 is 31 lifts, and skiresort.com's independent listing of named lifts matches it exactly once two things are set aside: skiresort.com counts the East Village Express Gondola's two cable sections (base to the Big Dutch midstation, then on to Park Peak) as two separate gondolas rather than one, and its total of 41 also includes 8 magic-carpet conveyors and the Hail Peak Express quad, which is built but was not yet running for skiers in 2025/26. Wikipedia's infobox figure of 36 lifts is older, from before the 2025/26 build-out completed.6

Guide
Deer Valley skied as a compact, four-mountain resort for over four decades before the East Village expansion more than doubled it for 2025/26, adding four new peaks reached by a three-mile gondola from a new base near Jordanelle Reservoir.
Ski-only since 1981, and still ski-only through the expansion
Edgar and Polly Stern opened Deer Valley on December 26, 1981, with five chairlifts and 35 runs, built around a hospitality-first idea of skiing that included ski valets and on-mountain dining rather than just lift capacity. The resort has never allowed snowboarding, one of only three ski areas in the United States that still does not, and Alterra has stated it intends to stay ski-only through the East Village build-out rather than opening the new terrain to snowboarders.832
The East Village expansion, phased in since 2023
Alterra and developer Extell Development Company began building what was originally called Mayflower on land east of the existing resort, near Jordanelle Reservoir, with the first lifts and terrain opening in phases from the 2023/24 season. The centrepiece for 2025/26 is the East Village Express Gondola, a ten-passenger Doppelmayr line with a midstation at Big Dutch that carries skiers nearly three miles and about 2,570 vertical feet from the new East Village base up to Park Peak in roughly 15 minutes, officially opened February 3, 2026. Seven new chairlifts and nearly 80 new runs came with it, integrating Park Peak, Big Dutch Peak, Keetley Point and Pioche Point into the resort's lift network and taking skiable terrain from 2,026 to more than 4,300 acres.9610
Where the terrain sits
The mapped split across the enlarged resort is 35% easy, 44% intermediate and 21% difficult. The steepest lift-served terrain remains on the original mountains: Daly Bowl and Daly Chutes off the Sultan Express, and the bump lines under the Lady Morgan Express. The new East Village peaks lean toward long intermediate cruisers, including the 4.8-mile Green Monster run from the top of Park Peak down to the East Village base, currently Deer Valley's longest.536
Next door to Park City Mountain, not connected to it
Deer Valley sits a few minutes away by road from Park City Mountain, in the same town, but there is no on-snow route between them. Vail Resorts owns Park City Mountain and sells it on the Epic Pass; Alterra owns Deer Valley and sells it on the Ikon Pass. Park City Mountain also allows snowboarding across its whole terrain, unlike Deer Valley.43

By car
From Salt Lake City International Airport, Deer Valley is about 41 miles, roughly 45 to 50 minutes outside of storms or rush hour. Most routes run east on I-80 through Parley's Canyon, then either south on UT-224 into Park City for the original Snow Park, Silver Lake and Empire Pass base areas, or continuing on US-40 for the newer East Village base near Jordanelle Reservoir. Winter storms can add 20 to 30 minutes.
By train
There is no direct passenger rail to Deer Valley. Amtrak's California Zephyr calls at Salt Lake City, from where the same road transfer applies.
